Symptoms of a Failing Laptop DC-in Jack

A laptop’s DC-in jack is the connection between the Laptop AC adapter and the motherboard. As power enters the AC adapter from a wall outlet, it is converted to the DC power that a laptop requires to function. The DC-in jack is the port through which this power travels. Some of this power is routed to the laptop’s battery, charging it for mobile use. The rest is used to power the laptop while it is on and in use.

While it is not common for the DC-in jack to fail, it can happen. There are a few symptoms that may occur that can alert you to a failure.

Laptop Not Charging

Most operating systems have an icon which shows users the power status of the laptop. This icon will change from showing a battery when running on battery power, to a bolt or other indicator when the laptop is connected to an AC adapter and charging. If the AC adapter is connected properly to a known good power outlet and the laptop is not charging, there may be a problem with the DC-in jack.

Intermittent Charging

If the indicator that the laptop is charging is intermittent, a faulty DC-in jack could be the problem. If possible, test the AC adapter with another compatible laptop, or test another AC adapter with your laptop to eliminate the possibility that the AC adapter is faulty. In some cases, slightly moving the AC adapter tip while plugged into the laptop may make charging stop and start. In this case, it is likely the fault of the DC-in jack.

When a DC-in jack fails, the best course is usually a replacement. This replacement may require soldering skills and should not be attempted by someone without experience. Take the laptop to a repair center where they can test the part and provide repair service for you.
